Marketing vegetables? No problem!

Commercial production and marketing of horticultural crops

Swaziland Farmer Development Foundation (SFDF) has been establishing over 100 community gardens over the past decades. An independent evaluation showed that many groups are struggling with selling and marketing their produces. In a coordinated effort with another Swazi NGO- ACAT and thanks to the financial support of the African Development Bank a marketing company under the roof of SFDF has been established.

Sahee now supports the identification and training of 10 additional community gardens. They will be trained to produce according to the demands of the marketing company and will have a guaranteed buyer once their crops are ripe. Farmers will be assisted by SFDF-Extension officers to allow optimal harvests. This project will ensure a more reliable market and a higher income for poverty stricken smallholders in Swaziland. Once the cooperation between marketing company and community gardens has been established, the project is likely to run profitably by itself.
